Use a number 7 drill flake. If you lot don't have i, you will take to pick one up at the hardware shop.

Pigsty tapping requires odd size bits. This numbered bits are sized by wire gauge. Here is a link that shows a Craftsman set. You tin purchase them individually if the whole fix is non needed.

OR if you are tapping wood, and you lot are going to become purchase a bit, Apply A NUMBER eight INSTEAD OF 7....I accept found that going down 1 size when tapping wood works VERY WELL....A #vii gives you the proper contact percentage for metal.

Cafeen'south right, if information technology'south forest a 3/16 will work. A thirteen/64 is amend yet. (information technology's merely 2 thousanths of an inch larger than a #7 -- That's about the thickness of a human hair) (No, not a Ruby-red pilus)

you'd be suprized how minor a drill volition work if tapping woods. You can get abroad with a one/8 inch drill for a i/4-20 tap in a pinch. Its a bit harder to tap out the hole... you take to back out and clear the chips a lot.

In one case, I actually drilled and tapped in one stride. It worked simply it was very irksome.

A good tap and die ready will list different airplane pilot drill sizes for different materials to get the best threads. When you lot are cutting threads in soft metal (contumely and similar), part of the metallic bulges in toward centre, so you don't want quite as large a hole diameter as when doing steel or cast iron.

Near quality taps have the recommended drill size stamped correct on them.

ok ok. Who would take thunk that everyone would be soo interested in taps and drill sizes.

I used the 3/16 and information technology worked like a charm. At that place are many times where I tell myself, its a model airplane, not the space shuttle so merely make it work and salvage yourself some time and coin.

Thanks again,
brian

In that location are many times where I tell myself, its a model plane, non the space shuttle so only make information technology piece of work and save yourself some fourth dimension and money.

Yeah but why non spend the time and practise it right, then having to spend time again fixing what wasnt correct the kickoff time?
